Operating engineers work as heavy equipment operators, crane operators, mechanics and welders. Industries include construction, road building, paving, mining, marine, & oil and gas. They are highly skilled and masters in the operation of specialized equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment such as cranes and earth-moving equipment, including backhoes, bulldozers, loaders & graders
    • Cranes move heavy loads into position
    • Earth-moving equipment excavates, moves, loads and grade earth, rock, gravel or other materials
  • Operate high technology equipment with computer-controlled systems
  • Conduct pre/post operational checks & perform minor repairs on equipment

Successful completion of online Trades Assessment.

Apprenticeship Program: The IUOE Local 115 Training Association (IUOETA) is a designated training provider by the Industry Training Authority and specializes in offering training and apprenticeships in the Mobile Crane Operator, Heavy Equipment Operator and Asphalt Paving/Laydown Technician programs. The IUOETA also sponsors apprentices as Heavy Duty Mechanics, Commercial Transport Mechanics, Plant Operator, Hoist Mechanics and Welder programs.
