Heavy Equipment Operator

I like variety in my work. My duties can change daily depending on the job and the site I’m working on.

Heavy Equipment Operators operate heavy machinery such as articulating haul trucks, loaders, excavators, backhoes, dozers, graders, rollers, and skid steers. These machines are universally used for all heavy construction, including earthmoving, road building, mining, and forestry. Operators are responsible for safe equipment operations, basic equipment maintenance, the application of markers, grades and stakes, and the heavy equipment GPS guiding systems.

Responsibilities

  • Safe operation of haul trucks, loaders, dozers, excavators, graders, and other heavy equipment
  • Operate heavy paving equipment safely for building roads
  • Perform preliminary and post-operational checks, clean, lubricate, and refuel equipment; and perform daily maintenance

Entrance Requirements

Successful completion of online Trades Assessment.

Apprenticeship Program:

The IUOE Local 115 Training Association (IUOETA) is a designated training provider by the Industry Training Authority and specializes in offering training and apprenticeships in the Mobile Crane Operator, Heavy Equipment Operator and Asphalt Paving/Laydown Technician programs. The IUOETA also sponsors apprentices as Heavy Duty Mechanics, Commercial Transport Mechanics, Plant Operator, Hoist Mechanics and Welder programs.

Hourly Pay

Salary Range: $28 – $60/hr
