Hazardous Materials Abatement Worker

I am proud of the important role I have during renovation or demolition of structures. I make sure materials are removed safely before other trades come in to start their work.

Hazardous materials abatement workers identify, remove, package, transport and dispose of hazardous materials such as asbestos, mould, lead, mercury, PCBs and other biological hazards.

You have mechanical aptitude.

You are physically fit.

You are detail-oriented.

Responsibilities

Comply with safety procedures, provincial regulations and federal laws
Pre-cleans work areas
Build and dismantle enclosures for work areas
Set up and dismantle decontamination chambers
Remove and clean hazardous material
Perform post tear-down clean
Conduct routine inspections

Key Skills & Attributes

Strong communication, reading, numeracy & problem-solving skills
Physical fitness, stamina, ability to lift 25 kg
Self-starter, ability to work in teams or alone

Entrance Requirements

High School (recommended prerequisites):

Minimum Grade 10, Grade 12 preferred

Apprenticeship Program:

3 years of training, including 4,800 hours of practical training, 48 hours of in-class technical training and exam. Certified Hazmat Worker certificate awarded after
successful completion. As a trainee, you also earn while you learn

Hourly Pay

Salary Range: $18.50 – $32.91*/hr (*2020 rates)
