Painters/decorators apply decorative and protective finishes in commercial, institutional and industrial settings. They prepare a variety of surfaces (wood, masonry, drywall, plaster, concrete, synthetics, stucco and metal) prior to the application of materials such as paint, high performance coatings, waterproofing, fireproofing, varnish, shellac, wall coverings, and specialty finishes.
Responsibilities
- Use, maintain and repair various types of spray pumps, spray guns, pressure washing equipment and sand blasting equipment & related components
- Read and interpret blueprints
- Repair, clean and prepare surfaces
- Apply paint, wallpaper and other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and structures
- Mix coatings according to manufacturers’ specifications
- Dispose of and recycle paints, coatings and solvents in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications & local regulations

High School (recommended
prerequisites):
- Minimum Grade 10, Grade 12 preferred
Apprenticeship Program:
4 years of training, including 5,400 hours
of work-based training and 18 weeks of technical training hours and exam. Journeyperson certificate awarded after successful completion. As an apprentice, you also earn while you learn
